Quick answer

Cat Ba Island sits off the coast near Hai Phong, so however you travel from Hanoi, the trip has two parts: a road journey to the coast, then a short water or cable car crossing onto the island. If you want it fast and easy, book a private car or limousine straight through, about 3 hours door to door. If you want the best value, take a bus and cable car combo, about 3.5 hours, and just be sure you reach the crossing before the cable car's 3:45pm last run. On a tight budget, the classic bus and ferry combo still works well, about 4 hours. All three are covered below, with real prices and what to do once you land.

Where Cat Ba Island actually is

Cat Ba is the largest island in Lan Ha Bay, right next to Ha Long Bay, and it belongs to Hai Phong city rather than Hanoi or Quang Ninh. That single fact explains almost everything about getting here: there is no bridge all the way from the mainland to the island itself, so every route from Hanoi ends the same way, with a crossing over water, either by cable car or by ferry, after a two to three hour road trip to the coast. The difference between the three options below is really about which crossing you take and how much of the trip is planned for you in advance.

Option 1: Private car or limousine

Door to door, no transfers

Fastest & most comfortable
~3 hrstypical, 2.5–4 hrs
$120–170per car, one-way
4–7 seatsmost vehicles

A private car or limousine van takes the Hanoi–Hai Phong highway to the Tan Vu–Lach Huyen sea-crossing bridge, then either the cable car or the vehicle ferry across to Cat Ba, with your driver handling the whole thing. Since the fare is per car rather than per person, it becomes genuinely good value once you're travelling as a family or a small group of four or more.

This is the option we'd point you to if you're arriving late in the day, travelling with young children, carrying a lot of luggage, or simply don't want to think about transfers on your first trip to Vietnam. Book at least a day ahead, and two to three days ahead in high season (April to August, and any public holiday weekend).

Option 2: Bus + cable car

The best balance of price and speed

Best value
~3.5 hrstypical, 2.5–4 hrs
$13–19per person
15 mincable car crossing

Combo tickets from operators like Cat Ba Express run a shuttle bus from central Hanoi to Cat Hai Island, then put you straight on the cable car to Phu Long, on Cat Ba's northern tip. The cable car itself is genuinely spectacular, strung from what's recognised as the tallest cable car pillar in the world, and the crossing takes about fifteen minutes over open water.

Mind the 3:45pm cut-off. The cable car only runs from 8:30am to 3:45pm. If traffic or a late bus gets you to Cat Hai after that, you'll be switched to the vehicle ferry instead, adding roughly thirty to fifty minutes. It isn't a disaster, but it's worth booking an early departure from Hanoi (the 7 or 8am buses) to keep a safety margin, especially in peak season traffic.

From the Phu Long cable car station, a short taxi or pre-booked shuttle covers the rest of the way into Cat Ba town. Message us your arrival time and we can help arrange this last stretch.

Option 3: Bus + ferry

The classic, budget-friendly route

Cheapest
~4 hrstypical, 3.5–4.5 hrs
$10–17per person
30–50 minferry crossing

This is the long-standing way to reach Cat Ba, and it's still a perfectly comfortable choice if you're not in a rush. A coach takes you from Hanoi to a pier near Hai Phong, you cross by vehicle ferry (about thirty to fifty minutes, on the Dong Bai–Cai Vieng route), and a final bus or taxi covers the twenty to twenty-seven kilometres into Cat Ba town.

If your combo ticket doesn't already include that last leg, the public Bus 14 connects Cai Vieng pier to Cat Ba town every thirty minutes for 13,000₫, roughly an hour end to end. It's a reliable fallback and a good option if you'd rather not negotiate a taxi fare after a long trip.

At a glance: comparing all three

Typical door-to-door time from Hanoi

Hover a bar for the realistic range. Actual time always depends on traffic and transfers.

Approximate, door to door from central Hanoi. Ranges reflect traffic, ferry queues and whether you catch the cable car before its last run. Always confirm the current schedule when you book.

Coming from somewhere other than Hanoi

From Ha Long Bay (Tuan Chau)

This is the easiest connection on this list. A direct ferry runs from Tuan Chau Harbour to Gia Luan, on Cat Ba's north coast, in fifty to sixty minutes for about $2.30, with five to seven sailings a day depending on season. Faster high-speed boats and hydrofoils also run the same crossing in as little as ten to thirty minutes for $6 to $10. Either way, budget a short onward transfer from Gia Luan into Cat Ba town.

From Ninh Binh, Sapa or Ha Giang

There's no single direct service from these cities, and honestly the fastest combination changes with the season and with which bus companies are currently running through-tickets. Most travellers connect via Hanoi or via Hai Phong directly. If you let us know your dates and where you're coming from, we're happy to suggest the current best combination rather than have you guess.

From your arrival point to Rustic House

Wherever you land on the island, the last stretch into Cat Ba town is short. Here's what to expect and what to tell your driver: 70 Tùng Dinh, right by the town lake.

1
By private car: no transfer needed, your driver takes you straight to the door.
2
Via the cable car (Phu Long station): a taxi or pre-arranged transfer covers the rest of the way into town.
3
Via the Cai Vieng ferry: take Bus 14 into town (13,000₫, every 30 minutes) or a taxi (roughly 20–30 minutes), then it's a short ride to Tùng Dinh street.
4
Via Gia Luan (from Ha Long): a short taxi transfer brings you into town from the north side of the island.

Whichever way you're coming, message us your arrival time on +84 911 175 736 and we'll help plan the last stretch, or arrange a pickup for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book the ferry or cable car separately?

No, if you buy a combo ticket from a bus operator, the crossing is included. You only need to book separately if you're arranging your own transport leg by leg.

What happens if I miss the cable car's 3:45pm cut-off?

You'll simply be routed onto the vehicle ferry instead. It adds thirty to fifty minutes, but it isn't a problem, just something to plan around if you're booking a later departure.

Can I ride a motorbike from Hanoi?

Yes, confident riders do it in around three and a half hours plus the ferry crossing, which does carry motorbikes (the cable car does not). Check the weather and your insurance before committing to this one.

Is Cat Ba worth visiting as a day trip from Ha Long?

Given the transfer time each way, we'd honestly recommend at least one or two nights on the island rather than a rushed day trip. A short Ha Long Bay stay combined with a couple of nights in Cat Ba works very well as a single itinerary.

How far ahead should I book my transport?

A day or two ahead is usually enough outside peak season. In high season (April to August) and around public holidays, book three to five days ahead, especially for private cars.
