Where to Stay in Cat Ba When You Want Quiet

Looking for a quiet hotel near Tung Thu beach in Cat Ba? A plain guide to one family-run guesthouse 300 m from the sand: rooms, free bicycles, and trade-offs.

Quick answer

If you want a quiet base in Cat Ba, stay on the Tung Dinh side of town, about 300 m from Tung Thu beach rather than in the centre of town. Rustic House & Café sits at number 70 on that street: a seven-storey, family-run house with a café on the ground floor, a rooftop restaurant above, and rooms in between. This guide explains who it suits, who it does not, and how to book it without paying app fees.

Quiet, and still close to the sand

One guest reviewing us on Agoda put it plainly: a quiet spot, without the noise of the town centre, yet only a four-minute walk to the beach. That is the trade this street offers. You sleep on a calm side street, and the sand is four minutes away on foot.

Tung Thu is the beach the house sits near, about 300 m away. The address, in full, is 70 Tung Dinh, Cat Ba town, Cat Hai district, Hai Phong.

The house itself

It is a seven-storey, family-run house with warm wooden furniture inside. Do not expect marble lobbies or chrome; expect a cosy room and a team that treats you like family. Windows and balconies face the limestone mountains, the lake, and the sea. Reception is staffed around the clock, check-in starts at 13:00 (early if a room is free), and check-out runs from 11:00 to 12:00.

Which room fits which traveller

There are four room types, and they map cleanly onto kinds of trips:

  • The 6-bed dormitory for solo travellers and backpacker groups: wooden bunk beds, air conditioning, a bathroom inside the room, a lockable locker, a reading light and a power socket at each bed. It is the best-value way into the house, and the bathroom is inside the room.
  • The Twin Room with View for two friends or a couple who want separate beds (they can be pushed together): a large window over the lake and mountains, air conditioning, wifi, a private bathroom, a kettle and a small fridge.
  • The Triple Room with Sea View for three people: one large double bed plus one single, with a view over the sea and Cat Ba bay, a TV and a fridge.
  • The Quadruple Room for families of up to four: one double bed and two singles, a large private bathroom, and big windows that keep the room airy.

Honest note: if your priority is a balcony you can sit on all evening with a sea view, say so when you book, because views differ by room type, and the dormitory is a dormitory. Expect shared space rather than a private balcony.

What is free, and what is not

Free: high-speed wifi covering every room, the café, and the rooftop terrace; bicycles you can borrow any time to ride to the beach or around the island; and the 24/7 front desk, useful whatever time you arrive or leave.

Paid extras: the café and breakfast buffet, the restaurant and rooftop BBQ, laundry (returned same day for longer stays), and motorbike rental. Tours of Lan Ha bay, from day cruises to kayaking trips, and coach tickets back to Hanoi are booked at the desk. We would rather you knew the split before you arrive than discover it at checkout.

Booking direct costs less

Booking through us rather than an app saves 10 to 15 percent off the listed rate, lets you change dates more flexibly, and means you can ask for a room with the better view before anyone else takes it. The scores that apps show for this house are real: 9.1 on Booking.com, 9.3 on Agoda, 4.9 on Google Maps, and a perfect score on Traveloka. The house is also listed in Le Guide du Routard, the French guidebook published since 1973.

Frequently asked questions

Is the beach really walkable?

Yes. Tung Thu is about 300 m from the door, roughly a four-minute walk, and the front desk lends bicycles free of charge if you would rather ride. The Agoda guest quoted above described it the same way: quiet, without the noise of the town centre, yet a four-minute walk from the beach.

Which room should a solo traveller take?

The dormitory, almost always. You get a proper bed with a reading light and locker in a room of six, air conditioning, and your own shower. If you would rather have a private room, the Twin Room with View is the one.

Is breakfast included in the rate?

No, breakfast at the café or the rooftop buffet is a paid extra, as are the restaurant and BBQ. Wifi, bicycles, and the 24/7 desk are free. We keep the split clear so you can budget honestly.

Can I arrive early or leave late?

Check-in starts at 13:00, and the desk will let you in earlier if a room is free. Check-out is between 11:00 and 12:00. The desk is staffed 24/7 and handles luggage storage and trip planning at any hour, so early or late travel is easy to arrange.

How do I book directly?

Message or call the host, Huong, on WhatsApp or Zalo at +84 911 175 736, or email booking@rustichousecatba.com with your dates and room type. You get the direct rate, which is 10 to 15 percent below the apps, and a real person answering.
